Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints runs many Family History Centres in Perth and in country centres. They are open to the public and are free, but a donation is appreciated. Each Centre has different opening hours and these are changeable, so it would be advisable to check the website before visiting.

Each centre holds different records, though most have birth, death and marriage indexes for Australasia on microfiche. The International Genealogical Index is compiled by church members and is available at all centres.

Their major source of information is their website, which provides free access to family history, family tree and genealogy records and resources from around the world. It provides access to the International Genealogical Index, the Family History Catalogue, the USA Social Security Index and Ancestral File (which is a master index of personal family histories compiled and submitted by church members or members of the public) and many others. The website also provides access to all Salt Lake City Library facilities and allows patrons to order microfilm copies of records such as parish records, military and convict records, society journals (eg the Harleian Society), and much more. The records may be held on microfiche at the centres.

Other microfiche and microfilm holdings vary at the different centres. The Family History Centres provide a major source for Western Australians searching for ancestors and to access personal research and records from all over the world. Check LDS Maps to find a map of an appropriate meeting house (to which the family history centre is usually attached).
